About WinS

In 1996 concerned citizens in the Charlottesville-Albemarle area formed the “Women in Sports” organization to provide leadership and guidance in promoting the future success and recognition of female athletes in the surrounding area. At that time male students in the area were recognized by the Falcon Club; however, there was no system in place to recognize female students.

The Board of Directors proceeded to incorporate the “WinS” organization and to obtain through IRS the 501c (3) status. The Board set the organization’s goals to include scholarships, grants, networking, membership and fundraising/support.

Mission

The primary mission of Women in Sports is to provide leadership and guidance in promoting the future success and recognition of female athletes in the Albemarle/Charlottesville area.

Recognition and Goals

Women in Sports unites female athletes in a genuine spirit of fellowship through support, encouragement, guidance, and recognition of female athletes for their accomplishments in sport.

WinS hosts an annual recognition banquet each June. Athletes are nominated by their coaches from each of the area high schools (Albemarle, Charlottesville, Covenant, Monticello, St. Anne’s-Belfield and Western Albemarle) for the sports of basketball, cross country, field hockey, indoor track, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track/field, and volleyball.

All athletes, their parents and head coaches are invited to the annual awards banquet.

Athletes participating in sports other than those listed above may also be recognized.

Grants

WinS supports a grant program for projects promoting female athletes. Over 17 different recipients have been awarded grant money for their activities.

Networking

To provide a forum for those with a common interest in female leadership; and to enhance continued growth of physical activity and sports in the lives of females through the promotion of national, state, and local events.

Fundraising

By individual and corporate donations and the proceeds from the annual golf tournament for women.

Membership

Open to anyone in the community wishing to promote and support female athletes.
